In an effort to increase the use and safety of the main road leading to Secret Beach, the San Pedro Town Council has decided to allocate more resources to the improvement and lighting of the road. According to a recent article in the San Pedro Sun it was stated that;
This is great news! Not only for tourists and visitors who want to enjoy Secret Beach activities into the evening, but for business owners, residents, and real estate investors who have purchased land, or are building a home or rental property.
Improved and well-lit roads all throughout San Pedro, including the growing town of Secret Beach, will certainly increase visitorship which in turn will contribute to more businesses and services going in throughout the island.
The need for infrastructure is growing at Secret Beach. As the community continues to grow at a tremendous rate we are faced with the need to ensure adequate resources are available to businesses, visitors, residents, and property owners so that the area can continue to grow and thrive. The area offers so much and is so enjoyed by everyone who visits, that it will continue to grow in popularity.
At this point all the homes at Secret Beach are off-grid. This is one of the attractions in my opinion. The idea of a community that is modern and connected yet has a reduced environmental footprint due to the renewable energy systems that are on most of the homes is a great one indeed. So the need for a thoughtful and balanced infrastructure plan is key to preserving the spirit of Secret Beach.
Through carefully designed masterplans or infrastructure guidelines, the Secret Beach community can continue to grow and thrive which is good for all of Belize and its inhabitants.
As more homes are built and more businesses go in, key infrastructure will need to be addressed such as drainage and waste. At this time all septic and water are in closed loop and private systems. However, only recently has the CBA (Central Building Authority) and the San Pedro Town Council started to require very specific guidelines for how Septic and waste systems are to be built.
According to reports, business operators at Secret Beach like bars and restaurants are going to be required to update their waste systems in order to have their liquor licenses renewed.
While this change in building code may be an inconvenience and added expense to business owners, the need for environmentally conscious policies and guidelines are an important part of creating a place where people can live comfortably while at the same time minimizing their impact on the natural world that surrounds them. This is one of the main reasons that people come to Belize and to the Secret Beach area in the first place.
